A popular bottom-dwelling sportfish. Can be identified by light gray coloration with dark vertical bars or blotches throughout the body and red eyes. Small reddish spots are often present on the face. One 9” barred sand bass present in this exhibit
Habitat and distribution
Most commonly found in coastal areas with soft, sandy bottoms and among rocks or near rocky reefs. Ranges from central California to Baja.
Diet
Fishes, crustaceans (e.g. crabs and shrimp), and bivalves (e.g. clams and scallops).
Fun Fact
Barred sand bass are sometimes referred to as “grumps” in the angling community as some believe their downturned mouths give them a grumpy appearance.
