A small schooling fish. Can be identified by its silvery blue-black coloration and small size. Dark spots can be present in the back half of the body and tail, and a light blue band can be present along the top of the dorsal fin.
Habitat and distribution
Most commonly found close to the bottom near rocky reefs and kelp forests.

Despite its tendency to form large schools, Blacksmiths will form distinct mating pairs, in which females lay eggs on rocks or kelp and males guard the eggs.
