The Sargo can be identified by its uniform silver coloration, high back, and a single dark, wide, vertical bar across the middle of its body. One 10" sargo is present in this exhibit.
Habitat and distribution
Most commonly found in shallow coastal areas including over rocky reefs and in kelp beds. Ranges from central California to Baja California.
Diet
Crustaceans (eg. crabs and shrimp), mollusks (e.g. sea snails), and other small invertebrates
Fun Fact
The Sargo was successfully introduced into the Salton Sea in the 1950's, where it lived until the early 2000's when the Sea became too salty.
