PIER looks towards the future
Looking towards the future: This coming year will mark PIER’s 29th year in operation!
2025 will be the year that we focus on PIER’s uniqueness and strengths. The Pfleger Institute of Environmental Research has grown to be a premier research institution that works to support and advance Responsible Fishing practices. PIER understands that fishing plays a vital role in our community and we want it to persist and grow responsibly. We believe this to be true for both recreational and commercial operations alike.
This was Tom Pfleger’s original vision when he founded PIER in 1996 and it is more relevant now than ever before.
You might ask, what is Responsible Fishing?
It is fishing done the right way. It is fishing on well-managed stocks using low-impact and selective methods. It is the way forward if we want our children to experience and enjoy the ocean as we have in the past.
In recent years, our fishing communities (commercial and recreational) have lost the support they once had. They have dwindled in size and popularity despite our consistent and growing demand for seafood products. PIER is working to reverse this trend and encourage our community to ask questions about where our food comes from, what methods were used to catch the fish we eat and whether the products support our local fishing communities. This is how we can all support and promote Responsible Fishing.
This is a big lift, one that PIER cannot take on alone. We ask you to help support Tom’s Legacy by joining PIER on its mission to promote and advance Responsible Fishing in 2025.
