Tracking sand bass movements across the US-Mexico border
The sand bass is a transboundary resource that supports vast recreational and commercial fisheries across its range, which extends from Point Conception to Baja California sur, Mexico.
Recent concern has been voiced over catch trends and population status of sand bass off Southern California. To address this issue PIER is working to improve our understanding stock structure and movements across the US-Mexico border. Stock structure is a critical parameter of most stock assessment models.
To address this data-gap, PIER has teamed up with the Sportfishing Association of California (SAC), to initiate a conventional tagging study that focuses on transboundary movements. The work directly collaborates with Mexican researchers and regional management.

PIER will be working with SAC, colleagues from CICESE, UABC and a team from Mexico’s Secretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture to tag sand bass along the northern Baja California coast. This is an area that has received very little study and one that may help us better understand how much Southern California relies upon sand bass from Mexico.
If you catch a sand bass with a tag, please email us or call the number on the tag.
